Asbestos materials were commonly used in power plants, oil refineries, mechanic shops and other manufacturing industries as a heat retardant. Sadly, it wasn’t until the 1980’s when regulations were put in place to limit the use of asbestos due to risks for human health.

People who worked in large plants, such as the Conoco Oli Refinery and Hudson Energy Company, are at a high risk of mesothelioma and lung cancer because of the asbestos used in various equipment.

Unfortunately, many of the families of workers at the sites (listed below) also have an increased risk of developing cancer because of the asbestos fibers that were carried home on the body and clothing of those workers.

What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a group of naturally occurring fibrous minerals that were widely used in construction and other industries due to their resistance to heat, fire, and chemicals, as well as their insulating properties. The most common types of asbestos are chrysotile, amosite, and crocidolite.

Asbestos is commonly used for the following:

Construction materials: Insulation, roofing shingles, ceiling and floor tiles, cement products.

Automotive parts: Brake pads, clutches.

Other products: Textiles, paper products, plastics, coatings, and adhesives.

When asbestos fibers are disturbed, they can become airborne and inhaled or ingested, leading to serious health issues. Asbestos exposure is linked to several diseases, primarily affecting the lungs and respiratory system.

Here are the common signs of asbestos exposure:
Symptoms of asbestos-related diseases may not appear until many years after exposure. Some signs include:

Shortness of Breath: This is often one of the first symptoms and can progressively worsen.

Persistent Cough: A chronic cough that does not go away and may worsen over time.

Chest Pain: Pain or tightness in the chest.

Difficulty Swallowing: As asbestos exposure can affect the throat.

Weight Loss: Unexplained weight loss can be a symptom of a serious condition like mesothelioma or lung cancer.

Fatigue: Persistent and unexplained fatigue.

Swelling: Swelling of the face or neck.

Finger Clubbing: Enlargement of the fingertips and changes in the angle of the nail beds.

Some diseases caused by asbestos exposure include:

Asbestosis: A chronic lung disease causing scarring of lung tissue.

Mesothelioma: A rare and aggressive cancer affecting the lining of the lungs, abdomen, or heart.

Lung Cancer: Increased risk of lung cancer, particularly among smokers.

Pleural Plaques: Thickened patches on the lung lining.

Pleural Effusion: Fluid buildup around the lungs.
