Asbestos Exposure in Alaska

Although Alaska is currently one of the lowest ranking states in the U.S. for asbestos-related deaths, environmental and occupational exposure to the toxic mineral is still common. The state’s complex and active geology creates massive deposits of ultramafic and serpentine mineral ore, two rock types in which naturally occurring asbestos (NOA) is formed.

Processed asbestos has also been widely used by Alaskan industries for commercial materials such as insulation, pipe and furnace wraps, roof shingles, floor tiles and textured paints. Despite the associated health risks, many Alaskan companies used the toxic mineral as a building material before the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) began to regulate its use in the 1970s and ’80s.

What is Mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive form of cancer that primarily affects the mesothelium, which is the thin layer of tissue that covers most of the internal organs.
The most common areas affected by mesothelioma are:

Pleura: The lining of the lungs and chest wall (pleural mesothelioma).

Peritoneum: The lining of the abdominal cavity (peritoneal mesothelioma).

Pericardium: The lining around the heart (pericardial mesothelioma).

Tunica Vaginalis: The lining around the testicles (testicular mesothelioma).

The primary cause of mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos, a group of minerals used in construction, manufacturing, and various industries for its heat-resistant properties. Asbestos fibers, when inhaled or ingested, can become lodged in the mesothelium, leading to inflammation and genetic damage over time, which may result in mesothelioma.
Symptoms of mesothelioma vary depending on the type and stage of the cancer but can include:

Pleural Mesothelioma: Chest pain, shortness of breath, persistent cough, weight loss, and lumps under the skin on the chest.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma: Abdominal pain, swelling, nausea, weight loss, and bowel obstruction.

Pericardial Mesothelioma: Chest pain, irregular heartbeats, difficulty breathing, and fatigue.

Testicular Mesothelioma: Swelling or lumps in the testicles.
